National Geographic verlegt sein Medienarchiv in die Public Cloud

Die National Geographic Society wird ihr riesiges Archiv von unstrukturierten Multimediadaten in Zukunft im Cloud Storage von Nirvanix speichern.

Nach Angaben der Organisation sind das Aufrüsten mit Speicher und die Datenmigration zu teuer und unhandlich geworden. Die Gesellschaft erwartet mit dem Wechsel in die Public Cloud Einsparungen im sechsstelligen Bereich. Das gesamte Archiv des National Geographic beläuft sich derzeit auf Datenmengen in der Größenordnung von 100 TB. Dabei gehen die Verantwortlichen davon aus, dass sich die Daten in naher Zukunft auf der Petabyte-Ebene bewegen werden.

Erste Tests haben bereits ergeben, dass die Upload Geschwindigkeiten in die Cloud mit denen der aktuellen on-Premise Lösung zu vergleichen sind.

Der National Geographic sieht in der Nutzung von Cloud Services zudem bessere Möglichkeiten der Zusammenarbeit mit weltweit agierenden Videoeditoren und die Chance eigene Informationen und Inhalte online zu verkaufen.
